The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following six departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Pathology
• The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
• The Department of Medical and Clinical Genetics
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology

Epigenetics and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs)

Specific subject description

High throughput technologies to measure the mammalian transcription have realized us to the fact that the genome is pervasively transcribed to give rise to thousands of small and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). Previously we demonstrated association of lncRNAs with the chromatin on genome wide scale in human fibroblast cells. However, comprehensive understanding of complete repertoire of the chromatin interacting lncRNAs is lacking due to methodological difficulties. The position is linked to the projects with the focus on the development of the new technologies that allow better understanding of the lncRNA-chromatin interactions and their functional consequence on gene regulation.

Job assignments

The candidate must have a PhD degree and is expected to have good theoretical and technical knowledge in the RNA related techniques like RNA isolation, RNA-sequencing, Microarray, quantitative PCR, Chromatin RNA Immuno Precipitation, Chromatin Oligo Affinity Purification and Lenti-viral mediated knockdown of lncRNAs. The candidate should also have good knowledge in basic cell biology and cell culture techniques as various cell culture based model systems will be used for characterization of lncRNA functions.


An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.


PhD degree with specialization in lncRNA biology will be given merit. The candidate should have research experience in epigenetics, RNA-chromatin interaction and RNA-protein interaction. Knowledge and technical experience in RNA related methodologies as described above is preferable. The candidate is expected to have the ability to independently design the experiment and processing the data for scientific publication. The projects may need collaborative work so the ability to be flexible and work in group will be an advantage. Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of his/her earlier research experience in the field of lncRNA biology as demonstrated by publications in international journals.
