The focus of this GEN Market & Tech Analysis report is to present some of our recent industry tracking of the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) space, as this space is expanding and evolving.Highlights of this report:
- The lncRNA space is expanding and the numbers of lncRNA sequences deposited in the biological databases is increasing.
- However, the function of these lncRNAs is speculative currently; there is belief that they may be involved in epigenetic regulation of the genome and perhaps other functions in vivo as well.
- One of the emerging themes that is appearing is that lncRNAs may have potential as circulating biomarkers (as they are beginning to be identified and studied in biological fluids), primarily in cancer but perhaps also in other disease classes.
- Even though the microRNA field is much larger today and encompasses more segments (such as diagnostics and therapeutics development), lncRNAs must not be discounted and they may indeed hold diagnostic value—their sheer number in the genome suggests important biological roles.
