Session Description:       An explosion in the appreciation of the importance of noncoding RNAs in normal and malignant biology has occurred over the past decade. This began with the discovery of the extended families of microRNAs and subsequent investigation has established critical roles in cancer. These small RNAs control approximately half of all genes in mammals. Several long noncoding RNAs such as XIST, that is important in X-inactivation, have been extensively studied in terms of biology and molecular functions. Recently, many other long noncoding RNAs have been described and partially characterized in terms of functions. The expression of these RNAs frequently changes during malignant transformation.
